Metal Machine Tattoo and Piercing Studio
Metal Machine prides itself on being a “commercial/custom” tattoo studio. Our artists are equally comfortable and capable of tattooing everything from the smallest kanji on a foot to a full body fitted phoenix. Stenciled or Freehand, to say our artists “specialize” in any one tattoo style would limit the creativity with which they approach your unique tattoo experience.

Metal Machine Tattoo and Piercingwas founded in 1993 by Derek Baker who is one of South Africa's most highly awarded and well-known tattooists. The journey to the top of his profession began with being in the right place at the right time, says Derek, who was a hairdresser once upon a time. “I am a beauty school drop-out,” he quips. “I’d been tattooing myself for a while when I met Permanent Mark at the Playground, who took me under his wing as an apprentice.” That apprenticeship was “not long enough” says Derek, but nobody says coming up through the tattoo artist ranks is going to be easy. After completing his training with Permanent Mark at Steel Toe Tattoo Studio in Cape Town in 1991, Derek went solo under the name METAL MACHINE and opened Cape Town’s first professional studio in September 1994 – the only one at the time. Years of relentless work, a tireless hunger for knowledge, numerous trips to international and local conventions have resulted in Derek achieving a solid reputation as the best tattooist in South Africa. He is accomplished in many varied styles, including portraits, lettering, Oriental and tribal/blackwork. “My work speaks for itself,” says Derek modestly.
GrahamGraham was born and raised in South Africa where he studied graphic design in Johannesburg. He moved to the US in 1998 and has been tattooing since 2000 in Jacksonville Florida where he opened 8Th Day Tattoo in 2002. Although he tattoos a wide range of styles he specializes in portraits and realism.
International Tattoo ArtistsFrom time to time, International Tattoo Artists visit our shores for a working holiday. Whilst we would love to keep them captive in the studio, inking staff, friend and clients alike, we understand that we live in such a beautiful country, it would be cruel not to let our guest artists venture out of the studio and “into the wild” to do the “tourist thing”. Between the Garden Route, Robben Island and of course, Table Mountain it is understandably essential to book appointments with our guest artists.

PiercingMetal Machine was the first studio to offer professional body piercing in Cape Town, using only disposable surgical needles and zero-nickel release stainless surgical steel jewellery (316 LVM) to aid a comfortable healing process.
We offer a full range of body piercings for men and women and ensure safety in our piercing process and a professional bedside manner.
We also have an extensive collection of jewellery for you to choose from (though not all metals are recommended for new/healing piercings).
TracyA piercing artist with more than a decade of experience, it had never occurred to Tracy to enter the profession until she was offered a job at Metal Machine. She had already had numerous tattoos and piercings done there and through her relationship with the shop and the staff, Tracy developed an interest in both art forms but piercing in particular. “I collect one and inflict the other,” says Tracy. Derek offered her a position as receptionist and she subsequently received training from him. At the time, Derek was piercing as well as tattooing and needed someone to take over the piercing side.
After an apprenticeship which lasted a year Tracy’s first piercing client was a friend who volunteered her flesh. That was nearly 12 years ago and since then Tracy has pierced thousands of belly buttons, tongues, noses, ears, faces, genitals, nipples and every other body part imaginable. “I do draw the line somewhere, though,” says Tracy, who is always at the forefront of new developments in her craft. “The new interest is dermal anchors and skin divers, which are a lot more expressive on flat surface skin because you can create beautiful designs with flat stainless steel or black steel discs.”
